Book Review: Tower of Babble

I am reading a book now named Tower of Babble (How the U.N has fueled global chaos) by Dore Gold. It is a little older, (2004) but does a great job of laying out a case that the U.N. has caused nothing but wars and destruction since it's inception in 1945. It points out that the nations created by the UN, like Israel and Korea, along with the U.N.s handling of it's creations have led to nothing but wars and misery. It points out that on occasion after occasion, the U.N. has turned a blind eye to genocide, terrorism, nuclear proliferation and has been a force against world freedom from almost day one. I am only 1/3rd of the way through, but I have read enough good info in this 1st 3rd to go ahead and recommend it.

Misery index update, Wall Street vs Main Street

Months ago, I did a post about the Carter era "misery index." I promised to update the Misery Index from time to time as the numbers are updated. For our newer readers the misery index is very simple. It is the unemployment rate added to the inflation rate.
Unemployment rate is 9.8%
inflation rate is 3% over the last year.
That gives us a Misery Index of 12.8, up from 12.4 last time I reported. One important fact to take note of is that inflation dropped in the first half of the previous year but has increased rather dramatically over the last 3 months equalling out to 3%. I am very fearful of "decoupling" where the stock markets go up which looks good initially but those increases are caused by inflation which is a sign of a worsening economy. If this is the case then Wall Street is no longer a viable indicator of the strength or weakness of our economy. That explains why the stock prices on wall street are no longer indicative of what is happening on "main street."

Misery Index continues to rise...

A few months ago I began keeping track of the old misery index from the 1970s. It is a combination of inflation averaged over the last year combined with unemployment. Inflation over the last year was nearly 3% while unemployment is now 9.4 percent. That moves the Obama misery index from 11 when I started measuring this to now 12.4. If this bothers you just wait. As Obama follows Jimmy the nut farmer Carter's policies the misery index will follow. While the media says this economy is the worst since the 1930's great depression, the misery index in 1980 was 22. I can't wait...
