First, Commerce: when products arrive at the Port of Palm Beach or the Port of Miami the intracoastal waterways are used as a highway for ships to go in and out of the ports. This is especially true during times of rough seas as those waterways offer protection and keep those ships from running aground on our beaches. Those products then get loaded on to trucks and delivered all over the country. If the Intracoastal waterways aren't dredged every 10 years or after a major storm, they become too shallow for shipping traffic to utilize.
Also, the Beaches here in Florida are either Federal or State owned land. If the Federal government is going to take over land, it is responsible for maintaining that land. The State (at least here) does it's part. Without proper beach renourishment, drainage canals would fill with sand and the next time we get 20 inches of rain in a day which is not unusual, this whole area would flood. Fox news is telling this story as though the beaches are privately owned and such earmarks are going to fix up peoples' yards. I cannot speak for everywhere else, but here nobody owns beachfront property and those who live there pay a hefty premium which is used to renourish the beaches.
My point is, to say that the beaches aren't important and don't warrant any federal money to take care of them is untrue. This is no different than when KOOK not long ago explained how products got from farms to the store. Without our ports and intracoastal waterways, your Walmarts and Shopping malls would be a very empty place. If we want economic growth, transportation is one place where using money to fix and upgrade is an investment. (Our current administration has pretended do be allocating money for that and has not which is fraud, so do not read into this that I am supporting earmarks, but want the stupid money going to frisbee parks or into politicians pockets to actually be used for tangible improvements to our infrastructure or not at all)
