Glenn Said the other night that it had become clear to him when this country jumped the tracks. He didn't say when he thought that was. I have been giving it some thought, he said he is going to tell us.
Here are my two guesses 1901 is my first guess. Second guess 1865. We briefly came back just a little in 1981. But I think ever since about 1901 we have been in a slide.
Just my opinion
1913, the Federal Reserve Act which helped lead the the IRS. Our freedoms have been on the downslide since. Why did you choose your dates?
ReplyDeleteWell I just thought about all the things that happened during reconstruction and thought that, you know, we never healed. And taking slavery out of the mix, the issue was what were the rights of states vs the huge fedzilla. So that was one.
ReplyDeleteBut I really think it was with the election of TR that set the wheels in motion. He was the first Progressive president, and look at the expolosion in all types of regulations and government control that started ater the industrial revolution. There were some bright spots and certainly subsequent administrations sped it up and slowed it down, but the march to progressivism was started with TR.
I believe that post civil war reconstruction was the point. Government spending on reconstruction led to corruption. That led to the "carpetbaggers" who became "robber barons" and the American reaction to those few who took advantage of bad situations was progressivism. The Presidents after Lincoln were horrible and D.C was as corrupt in 1885 as it is now. TR cleaned up a big mess not realizing he was making a bigger mess in the process. Kook and I agree here and I didn't even read his post before I wrote this.
